Managing forests? No!

Excellent documentary featuring presentations by Ed Faison and Anastassia Makarieva explaining why tampering with forests with the idea of ‘management’ only causes harm.

The presentation by Anastassia Makarieva is long but especially worth watching as she explains how mature forests retain and regulate moisture, thereby drawing moisture further inland from coastal areas and vastly reducing their proneness to fire.

When I was listening to her talk I had tears in my eyes thinking how much damage humans caused in ancient times when all the ancient forests of the old world were destroyed.

This horrible destruction wasn’t just the elimination of organisms and entire chains of life, it literally changed environments from places eminently hospitable to life to barren wastelands as we see in areas like the Levant, Mesopotamia, the Mediterranean Basin, Ireland, the UK, etc. today.

What a grave tragedy this was. We humans are destroying the very Being which hosts life: Our precious and blessed Earth.

It’s sad to me as so many of us shallow humans study history and things like the ancient civilizations and their wars, etc., but we neglect what was the most critical part of the past: When ecosystems were wiped out and entire environments forever changed, when a great, ancient, magnificent, and sacred legacy that had existed for hundreds of thousands of years was handed down to our ancestors and summarily destroyed.

Even worse, it is still being done right now, in our lifetimes. Humans still haven’t learned in all this time how not to kill our Great Mother, and our societies are run by short-sighted madmen and criminals who are more than happy to destroy life for the sake of power, profit, and control.
